Here are some questions to consider:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Do you have the space, time and equipment you need to train an apprentice?<\/li>\n<li>Can you save time and money and hire an existing employee? You have access to a highly skilled pool of talent within your workforce?<\/li>\n<li>Are you a registered sponsor with Skilled Trades Ontario? (If not, scroll down to Step 3 - Register the Apprentice)<\/li>\n<li>Do you have a trainer or journeyperson available to train the apprentice?<\/li>\n<li>Can you schedule their in-class training so it doesn\u2019t interfere with work?<\/li>\n<li>Do you meet the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skilledtradesontario.ca\/about-trades\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ontario regulations for your trade(s)<\/a>?<\/li>\n<li>All trades with journeyperson-apprentice ratios should be 1 to 1 under the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ontario.ca\/laws\/statute\/s21028\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Building Opportunities in the Skilled Trades Act, 2021<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><em>You as the employer can sponsor and train the apprentice OR you can train an apprentice who is already sponsored by a group sponsor.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A group sponsor is an amazing resource that supports both apprentices and employers. They can:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>recruit, screen, interview and register apprentices - all the employer has to do is train<\/li>\n<li>help job-ready apprentices find an employer to train them<\/li>\n<li>register the apprentice with Skilled Trades Ontario<\/li>\n<li>connect apprentices with experienced mentors<\/li>\n<li>provide support and guidance to employers<\/li>\n<li>give employers information about financial supports for training a new apprentice<\/li>\n<li>save employers time and money and help them grow their business<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The group sponsor will also register the apprentice with you, the employer. To learn more about how a group sponsor can save you time and money, check out the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tcu.gov.on.ca\/eng\/eopg\/publications\/appr-group-sponsorship-grant-backgrounder-en.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Group Sponsorship Tip Sheet<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>There are many unions and support organizations who offer group sponsorships, including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.supportontarioyouth.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Support Ontario Youth (SOY)<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.meritontario.com\/apprenticeship\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Merit Ontario<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/horticulturetechnician.ca\/employer\/why-become-a-sponsor\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Landscape Ontario<\/a>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.liuna.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Labourers\u2019 International Union of North America (LiUNA)<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.clac.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Christian Labour Association of Canada (CLAC)<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Please note that this is not an exhaustive list of group sponsors. Many employer\/trade associations also offer group sponsorships.
